A creative community project exploring climate, identity, and the future of Newquay
Reflecting on Newquay’s Present to Imagine Its Future
In April 2022, Blystra Arts launched Snapshots in Time, a community arts project celebrating Newquay’s people, places, and possibilities. The project invited local residents to reflect on life after the pandemic and explore their hopes for the town’s future, especially in the context of climate change and community identity.
Project Details at a Glance

- Location: Newquay, Cornwall
- Audience: Open to all ages, with a focus on community participation
A Creative Response to a Changing World
Funded by Tresorys Kernow and Arts Well CIC, this project emerged from a desire to use art as a tool for conversation, healing, and imagining new futures. Blystra Arts worked with local partners to bring people together in creative ways – all while asking, What does a hopeful, climate-conscious future look like for Newquay?
Workshops, Film, and Pedal-Powered Possibilities
The project featured a series of creative workshops focused on accessible filmmaking using smartphones and simple editing tools. These were powered by Blystra’s unique pedal-powered energy system, making sustainability part of the process – not just the message.
Our partner organisations co-created a final community film that brought together movement, poetry, and local voices. A standout event, the Bubble Bike Boogie, brought joy and creativity to Newquay’s Killacourt with an open-air, family-friendly celebration.
Community Impact and Creative Legacy
Snapshots in Time sparked new conversations around the climate emergency and inspired residents to see their town – and their role in it – in a new light. The final film, which featured original dance and spoken word performances, now serves as a lasting piece of creative community storytelling.
