Get Creative Newquay – Nov 2018 – Dec 2019

4th April, 2025

Get Creative Newquay was 14 months of creative community workshops that ran once a month at various venues/locations across Newquay.

A man stands in front of a large, spotted sea creature puppet at an outdoor event, surrounded by families and children on a grassy field.

Workshops included visual arts, craft, dance and creative movement, music and singing, outdoor activities and everything in between.

The workshops were funded and supported by Cornwall Community Foundation, RAF St Mawgan, Newquay Lions and Newquay Community Orchard.

A group of people at night holding handmade lanterns and a colourful ‘Blystra Arts’ sign, gathered under a large illuminated sea creature puppet.

During this project Blystra Arts also joined the carnival parade and two of the winter parades as well. We paraded large scale puppets at two events, the carnival and the winter festival. The first sculpture was a sea witch sculpture and the 2nd was Morgawr (‘sea giant‘ in Cornish) who according to Cornish folklore is a serpent-like creature who lives in the sea near Falmouth Bay.

The team made other creations with the community too out of recycled materials like empty plastic bottles and food containers.
