July 2021 – Space Summer Storytelling Session.
In 2020 and 2021 Blystra Arts secured a number of commissions from Cornwall Space, Action for Children’s disability respite project. The project works with disabled children and young people aged between 5 – 18 years in Cornwall. They offer disabled children exciting new activities to try, providing families with an all-important short break. When the country was in lockdown and no respite activities could be arranged, Blystra Arts were commissioned and delivered an interactive, online show for the project’s young people in Christmas 2020.
Two actors, Jenny Beare and Jason Squibb, writer and director Ellen Moule and technician Dave Brown formed a “fixed team” under the Covid-19 restrictions and locked themselves in a room for a week to rehearse and then perform “The Grand Old Oak.” via Microsoft teams which Cornwall SPACE families could log onto live for the show. Ten performances were delivered in total to groups of around six families per show.
For Christmas 2021 we wrote and performed a show in Fourways Youth Centre in St Blazey for the families who were then able to venture out. A story was written about Morgawr the Cornish sea monster which had previously featured in Newquay Carnival. A workshop took place before each performance. Again, ten performances were delivered in total.
